Joen kanssa / Tillsammans med älven / With the River: 3–5
A border-crossing collective work-of-art in many parts 2023–2025
With the River pt. 3–5 is a work-of-art and an art process that studies through collaborative artistic work border-crossings and complex phenomena by different waters in the Nordic region during 2023–2025. The work unfolds in many parts in multidimensional ways both online and on location in Sweden, Finland and the Faroe Islands.
In With the River pt. 3.1–3.3 a group of Nordic artists from different art fields collaborate to build a multidimensional space for a collective artistic work in HaparandaTornio, Tórshavn and Helsinki. The collective works both online/in virtual spaces and on location during 2023–2025; the collective’s work on location begin with pt. 3.1 by/with the border river Torne between Sweden and Finland in October 2023. Pt. 3.2–3.3. are happening in the Faroes and in Helsinki region in 2024–25 (fundraising and practical planning is ongoing).
Pts. 3-5 are a collaboration between Mäkivuoti, Tjaldur and Jala Art Association who invite Nordic-based artists from different art fields to work on location together in HaparandaTornio, Tórshavn and Helsinki during 2023–25. The aim is to create a multidimensional space for a collective artistic work/art process that works long-term across borders both on location and through virtual spaces. The hosting partners for part 3.1–3.3 are Tjaldur (Helsinki, Finland) and Jala Art Association (Haparanda, Sweden). Eija Mäkivuoti acts also as the coordinator/facilitator of the funding and the practical arrangements and organisation.
The participating artists in parts 3-5 are: Eija Mäkivuoti (FI/SE), Henri Hiltunen (SE), Jessica Franzén (SE), Jouko Alapartanen (FI), Jón Sonni Jensen (FO), Mariann Hansen (FO), Friði Djurhuus (FO; from 2024), Matilda Löytty (FI), Mari Keski-Korsu (FI) and Alexandra Stroganova (FI/RU).
During our working period for pt. 3.1 in Haparanda/Torne river valley/Norrbotten we are hosting a public artist talk at Tornedal & Co on Saturday 7 Oct, 2023 at 15–18 (Swedish time) where the local people can meet the artists and learn about their art practices (link to invitation).
The collaborative artistic work is presented and comes together in art exhibitions / events / get-to- togethers / encounters on location (Pt. 4: 2024–25) and in an art book/publication (Pt. 5: 2025). During the working process we publish micro-stories and documentation on social media / online.
The collaborative artistic group work with With the River, pt. 3.1 in Haparanda/Tornedalen/Norrbotten, Sweden is supported by Nordic Culture Fund / Nordisk kulturfond and hosted by Tjaldur – Friendship Association Finland–Faroe Islands. Our collaboration partner in Haparanda, Sweden is Jala Arts and Crafts Association / Jala konst och hantverk.
